Description |
Three hammers (2017.33.1a-c) used by Josephine Signorelli to straighten needles at the Torrington Company. a) This hammer has a thin wooden handle that curves inward slightly at the neck before widening where it's attached to the head/blade. The head of the hammer is heavy, dense metal, most likely iron. There is a thin, rectangular piece of metal (bronze or brass?) slid into the head that extends outward. b) The second hammer has a wooden handle that is inserted into a metal cap, which attaches to the head/blade. The head is heavy, dense metal, most likely iron. One end is flat and the other narrows at an elongated angle. c) The head of this hammer has one flat end and one end that narrows at a sharper angle than hammers a and b. There is a thin, rectangular piece of metal slid into the head at the point of the angle, and it has a copperish tint - possible bronze or brass. It does not extend outward past the head as far as hammer a. |
