Description |
Wooden sign from the Griswold Tavern, formerly located on Torringford Street in Torrington at the junction of Route 202. Sign is made of two pieces of wood that are fastened together by a spline on either end. Wooden frame surrounding the sign is typical of the framestyle used by William Rice, the make/painter of this sign. Iron supports run the length of both sides of the sign, slightly overlapping the bottom and turning outward at the top. Sign is painted on both sides. One side contains an oval shape set against a mottled dark red background. Inside of oval has a black mottled background with a border design in black and gold with floral decor. GRISWOLD is centered inside the oval shape in gold lettering. 'Rice' is signed in lower right corner. Reverse side of sign also features an oval shape with the same coloring and mottled backgrounds. However, the name 'Griswold' is located across the top of the oval along with a barely legible date (18--), located at the bottom. Center of oval features a floral design in gold. Foliate designs surround either side of the date. As with the other side, the signature 'Rice' Is located at the lower right corner. There is evidence of another sign beneath the Griswold sign. In raking light, analysis of the sign appears to reveal the letters 'I. Mil". Signature Rice (Lower Right Corner, Both Front And Back) |
